Competition is seen everywhere we go in life! It is healthy and it helps us grow and learn more about ourselves and others. The problem with competition, is the theory or belief that the only winners are those that succeed! To be a champion it is less about what happens at the top and more about making it to the top!
Success is not based on competition, success is based on your struggles to the top. If you come into a competition with the “winner, loser” mentality, you are only hurting yourself because you are either going to win or lose. Regardless of your journey to the top you are either a winner or a loser. This should not be the case!! If your mentality is win or lose, there is going to always be a winner and a loser, meaning someone is going to be better, stronger and faster and i.e. more successful. If you base your success on someone else, your journey is going to be less about you and more about surpassing someone else. The focus of your journey to the top should be about nothing less than you and your own personal experiences. Of course, competition can keep you motivated and can be fun, for a while, but don’t base success on the final outcome. The best approach towards competition is to be concrete with your goals and stay focused on them, no matter what! If your goal is to make it to the top of the mountain, regardless of whether your opponent gets there before or after you, when you step foot on that mountain, you did it! You set a goal and accomplished it! Had your own personal struggles and rocks to jump over but you did it! That right there is pure success! No winners or losers on our mountain tops, only accomplished hard working individuals who had a vision and saw it through and through.
For someone to win does not mean that someone else has to lose! It is often thought that just like with peanut butter comes jelly and coffee comes cream, with a winner comes a loser. This can not be further from the truth! You do not have to be the ultimate winner of the race to be successful. Remember what your definition of success is and if you met that definition, you are a success! We all win in our own personal ways. The quicker we can realize what success means to us, the better the journey is and the more rewarding the outcome becomes.
